96-99 JD - One of the gems in the vintage will be the 2018 Château Léoville Poyferré, which is a powerful, incredibly sexy wine... In the same ballpark as the 2000, 2005, 2009, and 2010
97-98 JS - “one of the best wines that I have ever had from here”
Troplong Mondot is one of the most exciting names in Saint Emilion now that they are pursuing a new style with fresher fruit and less new oak. One of the best Troplongs in recent years, praise for the 2018 is lavish, and at £459 per 6, the price is a big discount on 2016 (23%) and slightly on 2015 (4%).
94-97 AG - The 2018 Troplong Mondot is a remarkable wine... Black cherry, raspberry, mocha, flowers, mint and spice all meld together in this captivating, arrestingly beautiful Saint-Émilion.
Clos Fourtet is one of the wines of the vintage, according to Galloni. A similar style to Canon with a beautiful range of floral and mineral notes, thanks to the excellent limestone terroir. The price is £1008, a shade over 2016 (96 NM) but this will sell quickly. We can also offer another high scoring St Emilion, Trotte Vieille, at £744 per 12 (98-99 JS).
Finally from Margaux we now have two Classed Growths that have both performed well in 2018:
Lascombes - a bold style of Margaux and a popular brand.
Issan – Lovely wine here with impressive elegance, but the price is a touch above 2016. 96 Decanter "This is a brilliant Issan with richness and poise".
Prices
CLOS FOURTET | £1008 per 12x75 | £504 per 6x75
94-97 AG - One of the wines of the vintage, the 2018 Clos Fourtet is positively stunning. In the glass, the 2018 sizzles with tension and energy. A whole range of floral, mineral and red berry notes develop, but it is the wine's exceptional sense of harmony that leaves the deepest impression. Consulting winemakers Stéphane Derenoncourt and Jean-Claude Berrouet turned out a glorious Clos Fourtet in 2018. Don't miss it.
ISSAN | £564 per 12x75
96 Dec - This is a brilliant Issan with richness and poise joined by a delicate acidity that pulls the fruit along. The tannins are deceptive, as they are supple and appealing, but the density and power builds over the palate and clearly indicates long ageing. A wine that feels like it's rooted in its appellation.
LASCOMBES | £665 per 12x75 | £333 per 6x75
93-96 WS - Dark and winey, with steeped currant and plum fruit forming the core, inlaid with a licorice root note and backed by a suave mesquite hint on the finish. Fine-grained. A serious wine.
LEOVILLE POYFERRE | £816 per 12x75 | £408 per 6x75
96-99 JD - One of the gems in the vintage will be the 2018 Château Léoville Poyferré, which is a powerful, incredibly sexy wine based on 64% Cabernet Sauvignon, 30% Merlot, and the balance Cabernet Franc and Petit Verdot, representing just 45% of the total production. In the same ballpark as the 2000, 2005, 2009, and 2010
TROPLONG MONDOT | £918 per 12x75 | £459 per 6x75
94-97 AG - The 2018 Troplong Mondot is a remarkable wine. All the elements fall into place in a stunning, aromatically intense Troplong Mondot that is full of character. There is a level of precision and vibrancy in the 2018 that is simply breathtaking. Black cherry, raspberry, mocha, flowers, mint and spice all meld together in this captivating, arrestingly beautiful Saint-Émilion.
TROTTE VIEILLE | £744 per 12x75 | £372 per 6x75
98-99 JS - Wow. This really sends a tingle down my spine. Love the energy and length to this. Very distinguished. Full-bodied yet tight, polished and compressed. It has a great finish. Exciting. Really.
