The Critics on 2018

James Suckling

James Suckling has already published a glowing report on the "exceptional" 2018 vintage awarding 14 potential 100 point scores and there are also 5 potentially perfect scores from the more conservative Wine Spectator. These notes can all be viewed in the en Primeur section of our website.

"Most people agree that it is a great year and can be compared in quality to recent excellent years such as 2016 and 2015.  I think it could turn out to be an all-time great, similar to 2010, 2009 and 1989, or even such classics as 1982 and 1959."

Jane Anson is once again covering the vintage for Decanter and has just revealed that she awarded 98-100 point scores to Beausejour Duffau, Cheval Blanc, Lafite, Mouton, Palmer, Pichon Lalande, Trotanoy and Vieux Chateau Certan.  We will be adding all of her notes as they are published along with those from The Wine Advocate, Antonio Gallloni, Jancis Robinson and Jeb Dunnuck.  For medical reasons, Neal Martin will not be tasting or publishing notes for the vintage until much later than usual, we will of course keep you updated when this is likely to be.

"I was cynical before I began tasting the Bordeaux 2018 wines in-barrel this year, I admit it. But it’s a very good vintage – maybe even great – albeit a little atypical for some appellations...  Perhaps the closest we can come to a definition is 2009 meets 2016 on the Left Bank, and 1998 meets 2015 for the Right Bank."
