Tasting Notes

Formidable aromas of blueberries and raspberries as well as blackberries. Chalk undertones. Full-bodied, very intense and focused with salt, chalk and berry character and a savory undertone. Wonderful potential. Better in 2022.

Very pretty and sexy already with blueberries, spices and meat. Full body, fine tannins and a fresh finish.

The 2014 Pavie-Decesse is a wine of aristocratic breeding. Here, the chalky soils give the wine a sense of energy and tension, with super-expressive aromatics, finely-sculpted fruit and exceptional finesse. The deceptively mid-weight finish is incredibly nuanced. All the elements are very much in balance here. The 2012 is effortless, gracious and striking in every way. The blend is 90% Merlot and 10% Cabernet Franc. The 2014 spent 34 days on the skins, followed by malolactic fermentation in barrel. New oak is 80%.

Seems like a wine that has been concentrated. But there is good compensating acidity here as well as the massive ripeness. Marked acidity on the end but vivacity rather than soupiness. Sinewy and taken to the limit. Drying finish. Should last a long time - in fact it demands time in bottle.

Ripe, displaying a piercing quality, with the raspberry, plum and boysenberry notes carried by particularly racy acidity and a very fine minerality. A chalky thread adds tension on the finish. This still has some unwinding to do.

The Château Pavie-Decesse 2014 is a blend of 90% Merlot and 10% Cabernet Franc cropped at 18 hectoliter per hectare on 6 October. It is aged in 80% new oak. It has a super-ripe, crème de cassis and blueberry jam scented nose that feels slightly porty, especially when compared to the Monbousquet '14. The palate is full-bodied with soft ripe tannin and plush black cherries mixed with blueberry and strawberry fruit. The palate actually works better than the nose: more harmonious than expected with plenty of "rondeur" on the finish. Hopefully some of its gloss with ebb away by the time of bottling because at the moment this seems dwarfed by the Château Pavie.
