Tasting Notes

A terrific success in a difficult vintage, the 2013 Rauzan-Ségla is made from 58% Cabernet Sauvignon, 39% Merlot, and the balance Cabernet Franc and Petit Verdot. It has a medium-bodied, balanced, elegant style as well as impressive black cherry and currant fruits, hints of cedar, and some background herbal characteristics. It’s a vibrant, juicy Margaux to enjoy over the coming 10-15 years.

The 2013 Rauzan-Ségla proves that this disparaged vintage should not be written off. It has a refined bouquet with the same blackberry and briary scents I observed just after bottling, nothing complex but it conveys the sense of "Margaux". The palate is medium-bodied with lighter tannins than the 2012, simple yet fresh with slightly dusty black fruit and an easy-going Merlot-driven finish. There is nothing wrong with this wine at all - just do not concern yourself with cellaring it for a long time. Tasted from a bottle from my own cellar.

The 2013 Rauzan-Segla has an elegant bouquet with blackberry and briary scents as well as a subtle violet scent that gently unfurls in the glass. The palate is medium-bodied with quite an attractive, pastille-like entry, decent weight in the mouth with a harmonious, nonchalant, quite detailed finish that will leave you wanting another sip. If you insist upon a Margaux from this vintage - here is where to come.

The grand vin has a fine bouquet, not complex but clean and fresh with redcurrant and raspberry fruit, nicely integrated oak. It needs a little more delineation although it does appear to gain clarity with encouragement. The palate is medium-bodied with chewy tannins, perhaps a little more rustic than usual but with good weight. Fine red fruit, linear and masculine, this deserves two or three years in bottle after release.

A 2013 with a firm and silky tannin texture and fresh and clean fruit. Medium to full body, with lovely textured mouth feel and a long finish. Savory and delicate.

Good flesh to the plum and cherry paste notes. Finish is relatively rounded, with a good red licorice edge. Not a ton of range but this managed to get some flesh, and delivers nice mouthfeel too.

Closed nose, chewy texture, light body. Somewhat simple flavours, but a very imposing tannic structure.

The 2013 Rauzan-Ségla is one of the brawnier wines I tasted in Margaux. Black cherries, plums, smoke, tobacco and menthol wrap around the palate. Savory and floral notes appear later, adding aromatic nuance. The 2013 impresses for the purity of its fruit and its overall balance. All the signatures are in place, but in miniature, which suggests the 2013 is likely to be a medium term drinker. The blend is 58% Cabernet Sauvignon, 39% Merlot, 2% Petit Verdot and 1% Cabernet Franc. Taste twice.

Dense, purple rim, lovely depth of fruit, smoothness of texture unexpected from 2013, seductively deep and still very Margaux. (90+ Points)

Deep colour. Aromatic with violet and lifted notes. Lots of flesh and texture, with good intensity of Cabernet fruit. A 2013 with nice concentration and some grip. Well-judged oak and lovely purity of fruit and good length.
