Tasting Notes

A deep ruby color is followed by a big, sweet nose of cherry jam and spice, but this wine quickly loses its energy and staying power on the mid-palate and finish. Drink it over the next 5-6 years.

A sleeper of the vintage, the 2011 La Croix de Gay possesses a level of richness and intensity that may turn out to be more impressive than in their 2009 and 2010. Composed of 95% Merlot and 5% Cabernet Franc from their 12-acre vineyard (15 acres were recently sold to l’Evangile), this wine exhibits a dense blue/plum color as well as a sumptuous bouquet of black cherries, blueberries, charcoal and a touch of spring flowers. Medium to full-bodied, rich and powerful (13.5% alcohol), it has enough up-front precocious fruit, glycerin and charm to be drunk young or cellared for 10+ years.

Tasted en primeur at the Pomerol Syndicate. The La Croix de Gay has a very fine bouquet with dark berries, some well integrated oak and crisp definition: elegant and understated. The palate is well balanced and underpinned by quite firm, chalky tannins. The finish is foursquare and dry, but that is in keeping with the vintage. This will be a satisfying medium-term drinking Pomerol that is natural and fresh. Tasted April 2012.

Renowned Bordeaux oenologist, Denis Dubourdiu, oversees the winemaking at all of the properties owned by Philippe Casteja, which includes Batailley. Their 2005, one of the finest efforts this estate has yet produced, is backward, tannic, and almost primordial in style. Built for the long-term, it offers plenty of sweet crème de cassis fruit intermixed with smoke, cedar, and earth notes. Full-bodied and powerful, it is an old style Pauillac with well-integrated acidity as well as sweet but elevated tannins. Give it 7-8 years of bottle age, and drink it between 2015-2035.

Ripe and fresh with vibrancy to the fruit. Firmly structured with good length. Promising.
