Tasted blind at the Southwold Bordeaux 2010 tasting. The Château Croizet-Bages has a very convincing graphite driven bouquet with fine definition and vigour. The palate is medium-bodied with graphite and tobacco infused black fruit, good weight and a strict and linear, clean and fresh finish. Not bad at all. A blend of 80% Cabernet Sauvignon, 17% Merlot and 3% Cabernet Franc, the Croizet-Bages has a rather muted, tobacco and sous-bois dominated nose, sans the precocity that the vintage offered. The palate is better, demonstrating more fruit intensity. A firm structure, tannic and gritty with cedar and graphite-laced black fruit towards the finish, hopefully this Croizet-Bages will round out during elevage. Tasted April 2011. The finest Croizet Bages I have tasted and, along with the 2009, a sure sign that this property is finally re-emerging after decades of mediocrity. Deep ruby/plum/purple, with a classic nose of black currants, cedar, Christmas fruitcake and licorice, this wine is flavorful, savory medium to full-bodied, with silky tannin. This is one of the last classified growths to get its act together, and kudos to them. Anticipated maturity: now-2028. This property is clearly on the upswing although they still have a long way to go to compete with the top end, non-first growth Pauillacs (i.e., the two Pichons, Pontet Canet, Haut-Bages-Liberal, Grand Puy Lacoste and Grand Puy Ducasse). Nevertheless, the 2010 Croizet Bages reveals plenty of classic, sweet creme de cassis, camphor and underbrush characteristics. Medium-bodied with good purity and texture, it may turn out to be as good as the 2009 and 2005. The tannins suggest it has 10-15 years of aging potential. Light, aromatic but is this 100% clean? Dense and very ripe. Very drying tannins on the end. Far from charming. Score: 15 - 16 Jancis Robinson MW, JancisRobinson.com Maturity: 2016-2022 Date: 01 April 2011 |

Rich cassis fruit, very good fleshy ripeness and good tannins to back it up, continuing improvement here, but not yet the complexity of most of the 5th Growths. Score: 16 Decanter, Decanter.com Maturity: 2016-2028 Date: 01 April 2011 |
