Tasting Notes

Inky colour, fresh flavours, crunchy red fruits, lift through the finish, fleshy raspberry, wild strawberries, juicy pomegranate, tomato leaf and fennel. Aged in a mix of foudres and demi-muy, harvest here on August 29, the same day as they finished the whites. Not sold En Primeur.

The 2023 Quinault L’Enclos is a sumptuous wine. Dark, layered and creamy in feel, the 2023 is beguiling right out of the gate. Plum, chocolate, spice, leather and cloves lend notable complexity. Frost and low yields in the Cabernets result in a more Merlot-driven Quinault than most years, which comes through in the wine's textural feel. Silky, plush tannins wrap it all together.

Matured in less than 25% new oak that includes some foudres and demi-muids, the 2023 Quinault l'Enclos, has a sumptuous bouquet: Dorset plum and light iodine scents, well-defined with nicely integrated oak. The palate is medium-bodied with fine, slightly grainy tannins. There’s a light marine influence at play, just attenuating slightly toward the finish as if to say "that's enough.” Compensation comes in the form of a persistent black pepper aftertaste that lingers long in the mouth.

Score: 90 - 92 Neal Martin, Vinous.com Maturity: 2028-2045 Date: 29 April 2024

Offering up aromas of mulberries, cherries and potpourri, the 2023 Quinault l'Enclos is medium to full-bodied, ample and fleshy, with an enveloping core of fruit, powdery tannins and mouthwatering acids. This blend of 67% Merlot, 16% Cabernet Franc and 17% Cabernet Sauvignon, considerable proportions of which are now matured in foudre and demi-muids, is no longer offered en primeur.

Score: 89 - 91 William Kelley, Wine Advocate, RobertParker.com Date: 26 April 2024

There is pretty tightness and purity to this wine. A well-focused palate, very integrated tannins and a long finish. One of the best ever?
