Tasting Notes

Medium to full intensity, leans into the vintage and shows a richer profile than it did En Primeur, when this depth of tannic power was fairly closed in. Black pepper spice, rosebud, peony, raspberry leaf, slate, sage, espresso and cocoa bean, this is a great quality du Tertre, with lift and concentration through the palate, understated finesse and it feels like it's going to go the distance. 60% new oak, Helfrich family. Single point upgrade.

The 2022 Château du Tertre has a slightly smudged nose compared to its peers. It's not as well defined as the Dauzac that I tasted before. That said, there are still quite precocious black cherry and blueberry scents to savor. The palate is medium-bodied, ripe and quite decadent with tarry black fruit tones, though the finish has sufficient freshness to keep it on track. This is a good choice if you like a more hedonistic Margaux.

Score: 91 Neal Martin, Inside Bordeaux Maturity: 2029-2055 Date: 12 February 2025

The 2022 du Tertre is a rich, dense wine. Inky dark blue/purplish fruit, lavender, licorice and sweet spice all meld together. This is an especially open-knit Margaux, particularly considering Cabernet Sauvignon and Cabernet Franc drive the blend.

Score: 92 Antonio Galloni, Inside Bordeaux Maturity: 2026-2034 Date: 28 January 2025

A big, raw, exuberant, incredibly promising barrel sample, the 2022 Château Du Tertre reveals a vivid purple hue as well as full-bodied aromas and flavors of crème de cassis, spring flowers, and graphite. A blend of 57% Cabernet Sauvignon, 23% Cabernet Franc, and the rest Merlot and Petit Verdot, this terrific Margaux has fine tannins, beautiful balance, and a great finish. The cellar will be your friend here.

The 2022 du Tertre unwinds in the glass with aromas of dark berries, plums, licorice, vine smoke and petals, followed by a medium to full-bodied, deep and layered palate of uncommon depth and concentration that nevertheless retains all the estate's signature elegance. Polished and supple, it's a blend of 57% Cabernet Sauvignon, 23% Cabernet Franc, 15% Merlot and 5% Petit Verdot, which more or less represents this estate's varietal breakdown after its extensive replanting program is complete. This looks likely to emerge as the finest du Tertre in several decades, and it is sure to be one of the better values of the en primeur campaign.

This is really clear and bright. Medium- to full-bodied with a solid tannin structure. Tight layers of phenolics to this. Racy and long finish. Firm and focused. 57% cabernet sauvignon, 23% cabernet franc, 15% merlot and 5% petit verdot.
