Tasting Notes

Confirming my expectations, the 2022 Larrivet Haut-Brion is one of the best wines ever produced at this estate. Revealing a complex, vibrant bouquet of cassis, lilac, iris, mulberries, spices and menthol complemented by barely noticeable oak, it's medium to full-bodied and layered with a seamless, pure texture and a fleshy core of fruit perfectly framed by velvety tannins and bright acids. The Cabernet Franc contributes a floral finish, while the Cabernet Sauvignon adds a balanced structure. It should age gracefully.

Lovely aromatics here, dives straight in to a charming, fruit-filled glass, nothing too concentrated in colour or on the nose, still with plenty of personality. Edge of vanilla bean smoke on the nose, there is a sweetness here, raspberry puree, fragrant lemongrass, violet and cherry pit. Enjoyable, fresh acidities on the finish. Dominant Cabernet, with over 80% between Sauvignon and Franc, and a generous for the vintage 40hl/h yield. 15% whole cluster, aged in a mix of amphora, new barrels and one year old barrels. Tasted twice.

The 2022 Larrivet Haut-Brion never engages on the nose as I would like. The nose contains brambly red fruit and soy aromas of moderate complexity. The palate is medium-bodied with supple tannins. It has moderate depth, though it's missing a little grip on the finish that shows quite a bit of sucrosity. Perhaps this is an early-drinking charmer, but it could have been more.

The 2022 Larrivet Haut-Brion is dense, powerful and explosive. Black cherry, plum, new leather, licorice and mocha are amplified in this dramatic, deeply resonant wine. Gorgeous.

I loved the 2022 Château Larrivet Haut-Brion, and I wouldn't be surprised to see this check in near the 2020, although it's in a riper, more sexy style. Cassis, plums, chocolate, and earthy notes all emerge from this full-bodied Graves that has an expansive, layered mouthfeel, ripe, velvety tannins, and solid mid-palate density. It's going to benefit from just a few years of bottle age. The blend is 61% Cabernet Sauvignon, 21% Cabernet Franc, and the balance Merlot, resting in 50% new oak, with a small amount in amphora.

The 2022 Larrivet Haut-Brion offers up aromas of blackcurrant, blueberry, raspberry, violet, orange zest, iris and ripe plums, followed by a medium to full-bodied palate that's supple, seamless and elegant, its succulent core of fruit framed by velvety tannins, concluding with a floral finish. A blend of 61% Cabernet Sauvignon, 18% Merlot and 21% Cabernet Franc—the most significant portion of this grape variety ever used at this estate run by Bruno Lemoine—this is one of the most interesting wines that this estate has produced in recent years. It matured in 15% amphorae, 50% new barrels and the balance in tanks. YC

Broad and structured, but supple and sleek, with fine-grained tannins. Medium- to full-bodied. Hints of coffee beans and cedar. Solid finish. Bright.
