Tasting Notes

Soft ruby colour, fresh acidities that feel sculpted rather than overly sharp, this has settled in well over ageing, with cloves, sandalwood, plenty of white pepper and sour plum balanced by richer blueberry fruit. Enjoyable, savoury if a little light through the mid palate. First full year under new owners the Helfrich family, with the talented Frederic Ardouin remaining as technical director, and Cynthia Capelaere as estate director. Recorded blend different from En Primeur. Tasted twice.

The 2021 du Tertre is a dark, somber wine. Blackberry, gravel, incense, tobacco, espresso and licorice add to that impression. The oak imprint feels especially strong, which further contributes to the wine's brooding character. Overall, the 2021 is quite bold and assertive, but it also comes across as unexpressive.

The 2021 Château du Tertre has a composed bouquet with cedar and violet-tinged red fruit, harmonious with nicely integrated oak. This has a little more fruit concentration than its peers. The palate is medium-bodied with sapid, pastille-like black fruit, and its smooth, harmonious finish has more joie-de-vivre than some of its peers. This is a well-crafted wine that should give pleasure over the next decade.

Dark crimson. Intense, rather glamorous nose. Rich and silky-smooth. Quite seductive and none of the café-crème (oak?) notes that this wine used to have. Good combination of intensity and refreshment. Very long. Quite a success! Even if it comes to a rather sudden halt. Medium tannic grip on the end.

A juicy and soft textured, medium-bodied red with cherry, earth and orange-peel character. Creamy and delicious. 64% cabernet sauvignon, 20% cabernet franc, 10% merlot and 6% petit verdot.

The 2021 du Tertre is a very pretty, elegant wine, bursting with aromas of wild berries, exotic spices, cigar box and loamy soil. Medium to full-bodied, ample and seamless, it's velvety and enveloping, with bright acids, beautifully refined tannins and a mouthwatering finish. The blend this year is 64% Cabernet Sauvignon, 20% Cabernet Franc, a mere 10% Merlot and 6% Petit Verdot.

The 2021 Château du Tertre showed well, and I certainly wouldn't be surprised to see it end up being an outstanding wine. With solid ripeness in its blue fruits, flowers, violets, and spicy aromas and flavors, it's medium-bodied, has a round, supple, plump mouthfeel, and a good finish.
