This steals up on you, with rose petals, raspberry leaf and white truffle aromatics. Expect a more linear wine than the polar opposite 2022 vintage of Petrus, and enjoy the delicate floral character. As it opens some of the characteristic density of Petrus arrives, with richer black cherry, damson, cocoa bean, cloves and grilled spice. Great balance and delicacy, will age 15 to 20 years easily. The nature of the vintage has been respected, and it's a hard one to score to be honest, because there is a lot to love here, but it is atypical of Petrus for collectors. Has definitely found its character over ageing, and is full of pleasure but this is a 94 Petrus. Might well be a 96 for pretty much any other wine, but if you are a regular Petrus drinker, you should expect an earlier drinking version. Harvest September 30 to October 5, 33hl/h yield. Shortened the time in barrel for ageing but kept at 50% new oak. Score: 94 Jane Anson, Inside Bordeaux Maturity: 2027-2041 Date: 26 March 2024 |

The 2021 Petrus is delicate, pretty and understated, just as it was en primeur. Crushed red berry fruit, mint, lavender and rose petal are all finely knit in a Petrus that is built more on delicacy than power. Silky tannins and mid-weight structure add to an impression of understated finesse. The 2021 is a beautifully elegant Pomerol of total seduction. In this vintage, Petrus was done with 5-10% less oak than the norm, while time in barrel was shortened by 2-3 months. The 2021 Pétrus, which was bottled last June, as usual takes a few swirls of the glass to really settle into its groove. Olivier Berrouet said that he did not try to push this wine, decreasing the percentage of new oak and shortening the time in barrel by a couple of months. It eventually offers scents of black cherries, bilberry, light incense and hints of lavender that come through with aeration, all with very fine definition. The palate is medium-bodied with fine-grained tannins, very well-balanced, fresh and more saline than recent vintages. Silky-smooth toward the finish, this is a classically styled Pétrus that has a glorious future ahead. 13.2% alcohol. Score: 95 Neal Martin, Vinous.com Maturity: 2029-2055 Date: 22 February 2024 |

Beautiful length and depth here for the vintage, with blackberry, raspberry and blueberry character. Cloves and sandalwood, too. Full and layered. Ripe and ample, yet balanced and fresh. Crunchy and very bright. Score: 98 - 99 James Suckling, JamesSuckling.com Date: 01 May 2022 |

One of the most structured, introverted wines of the appellation, the 2021 Pétrus unwinds in the glass with aromas of sweet cherries, licorice and black truffle, framed by an extremely discreet patina from its élevage in barrel. Full-bodied, ample and concentrated, it's lively and intensely flavored, built around bright acids and powdery tannins that assert themselves on the long, sapid finish. This is a terrific effort in a challenging vintage from Olivier Berrouet and his team, but it will require patience.
