Tasting Notes

Cloves and liqourice on the opening beats, with savoury blueberry and redcurrant fruits, and Cabernet Sauvignon tomato leaf and pencil lead making an impact. These wines are really proof of how good the Durantou stable is, standout 2021s for me, playing with finesse and drinkability. Harvest September 30 to October 8. 50% new oak.

Score: 93 Jane Anson, Inside Bordeaux Maturity: 2026-2040 Date: 26 March 2024

The 2021 Montlandrie is a powerful, brooding wine. Black cherry, plum, gravel, incense, scorched earth, tobacco, menthol and clove are dialed up. En primeur, Montlandrie was on the lighter side, but it has gained quite a bit of volume in the mid-palate with aging. It will be interesting to see if this softens. The 2021 is an intriguing wine that may well surprise in time.

Score: 91 Antonio Galloni, Inside Bordeaux Maturity: 2024-2033 Date: 27 February 2024

The 2021 Montlandrie initially shows just a touch of reduction on the nose, but it gradually opens in the glass to reveal that mélange of red and black fruit, hints of licorice and pain d’épices, quite complex though not intense. The palate is medium-bodied with edgy tannins. This has a fine line of acidity, nicely poised, very fresh and saline toward the finish with a dash of black pepper on the aftertaste. This has meliorated a little during its élevage, and it should drink well for 12 to 15 years.

75% Merlot, 20% Cabernet Franc, 5% Cabernet Sauvignon. Cask sample. Plenty of chalky lift, the acidity present but matched by fruit and tannins. Wild terroir note just about tamed. Lively finish. Will need a little patience and to be matched with food. (JL) 14%

Perfumed and vibrant already, with a ripe, textured and creamy tannin frame. Pretty blue and purple fruit. Juicy finish. Salty. 75% merlot, 20% cabernet franc and 5% cabernet sauvignon.

Score: 92 - 93 James Suckling, JamesSuckling.com Date: 01 May 2022

A blend of 75% Merlot, 20% Cabernet Franc and 5% Cabernet Sauvignon, the 2021 Montlandrie exhibits aromas of rich berries and cherries mingled with loamy soil, spices and potpourri. Medium to full-bodied, lively and incisive, it's nicely concentrated, with fine depth at the core and a bright, saline finish. Its Côtes de Castillon origins mark this out as the most tensile, mineral wine in the Durantou portfolio.

Score: 90 - 92 William Kelley, Wine Advocate, RobertParker.com Date: 29 April 2022

The 2021 Château Montlandrie (75% Merlot, 20% Cabernet Franc and 5% Cabernet Sauvignon) has serious potential and will unquestionably be an outstanding wine. More closed and reductive, with beautiful cassis fruits and hints of graphite and minerality, it's medium-bodied and delivers solid richness and depth, ripe tannins, and a great finish. It's a surprisingly powerful wine in the vintage and will benefit from 2-3 years in the cellar.
