Tasting Notes

I tasted two bottles of the 2018 Le Plus de la Fleur de Boüard. The first was sealed with a capsule, but underneath I found a plastic closure instead of a cork – obviously a mistake on the bottling line! The second was as intended. It has a typically rich and opulent bouquet of layers of black cherries, crème de cassis, crushed violet and iris scents. The palate is sweet and decadent on the entry, a bold Lalande de Pomerol yet balanced and with sufficient freshness on the sweet finish. Licorice and a touch of sea salt linger on the aftertaste. For me, it’s too big and forthright, but those with a penchant for hedonistic Right Banks will find it more to their taste.

The 2018 Château La Fleur De Boüard Le Plus is cut from the same cloth yet has another level of density and richness on the palate. Blackcurrants, cassis, smoked tobacco, graphite, and charcoal notes all give way to a full-bodied, beautifully textured, concentrated, and voluptuous beauty that does everything right. It's a big, powerful wine offering ample structure and length. Give bottles 2-4 years and enjoy over the following decade or more. Hats off to team Boüard for another thrilling lineup of wines.

A bigger, richer wine, the 2018 La Fleur De Boüard Le Plus is a deep, powerful wine that's loaded with blackberry and cassis fruits, notes of graphite and licorice, integrated oak, full body, and a supple, sexy texture. Give bottles 2-4 years of bottle age and enjoy over the following two decades.

Made of 100% Merlot, the deep purple-black colored 2018 Le Plus is quite closed and broody to begin, opening to give notions of baked plums, warm black cherries and kirsch plus touches of Chinese five spice, bay leaves and fragrant earth. Medium to full-bodied, the palate is completely packed with ripe, rich black fruits with loads of earth and herbal accents to brighten it up, framed by rounded tannins, finishing long and spicy.

No wine was produced here in 2017 due to frost, but the 2018 is highly successful. It's one of the very few vintages where I prefer this to the grand vin: it's inky and deep in colour, and there's no question that the oak give walls and tannic structure. But everything is well integrated and balanced, and the charred notes give an extra kick that softens the austerity. As I often think, if they combined the two wines it really could be a brilliant ensemble, but it's definitely clear that this wine has an edge in 2018.

This is always an impressive selection of old vines that delivers depth and authenticity. Full and layered with fantastic fruit and polished tannins. Mushroom and bark undertones. Dense and energetic.
