Tasting Notes

Situated close to Chateau Montrose and Phelan Segur, Meyney has always been solid St Estephe. 2014 was the first full vintage under the consulting eye of Hubert de Bouard of Chateau Angelus, bringing richer fruit and a touch of glamour to Meyney. Inky dark with a slightly muted nose that needs coaxing. Big and broad in the mouth, spicy black curranty and cherry fruit, tight and spiky at first but opens out to reveal softer sweeter layers. Beefy and bold with impressive richness, extract and concentration.

Very dark crimson. Smells just very slightly tired although the sample was taken yesterday. Minty nose. Thick and sweet with slightly heavy oak imprint.

This has good flesh, with a tobacco edge framing the black cherry and red currant fruit. A warm stone note emerges on the finish.

The 2015 Meyney has a rounded red cherry and blackcurrant scented bouquet with a touch of spice that only develops with rigorous aeration. The palate is medium-bodied with supple tannin. I appreciate the fleshiness of this Saint Estèphe and it is nicely balanced. I can envisage this being an enjoyable 2015 to drink over the next decade, even if I suspect they will create better vintages in the future.

An outstanding red with blackberry and chocolate character. Full to medium body, silky tannins and a fresh finsih. Very well done for the vintage considering less than perfect conditions in St. Estephe.

Score: 91 - 92 James Suckling, JamesSuckling.com Date: 01 April 2016

The 2015 Meyney is round, supple and inviting. This is an especially creamy, voluptuous Saint-Estèphe with the fruit pushed forward and silky tannins that add to an impression of raciness. Ultimately the 2015 offers lovely density, not to mention considerable polish in a fruity, juicy style. Tasted two times.
