Burgundy 2018: TAUPENOT-MERME

Domaine Taupenot-Merme.jpg

Romain Taupenot is one of the rising stars of the region, now responsible for the family holdings in Gevrey Chambertin and Morey St Denis.

Romain's aim is for the wines to express their terroir rather than a house style.  His decision to bottles his two Grands Crus, Charmes & Mazoyeres Chambertin separately was a good one, as he is now considered one of the key producers of the latter cru.  The 2018s will further enhance his reputation as one of the most exciting winemakers in the region - the powerful Mazoyeres Chambertin is one of Neal Martin's top scoring wines of the vintage (receiving the same score as Roumier Bonnes Mares, DRC La Tache, Vogue Musigny and Sylvain Cathiard Romanee St Vivant).

"one of the most reliable and exciting estates"

Villages

GEVREY CHAMBERTIN 2018
£210 per 6x75 IB
"A different aromatic profile presents much more forest floor and sauvage-infused aromas of red currant and poached plum. The rich, caressing and suave medium weight flavors are shaped by slightly riper tannins on the better balanced finale. This is quite good though note that it is a firmly structured and ageworthy Gevrey villages. Outstanding Top value. Drink 2028+"
89-91 Allen Meadows, Burghound

CHAMBOLLE MUSIGNY 2018
£225 per 6x75 IB
"The 2018 Chambolle-Musigny Village has a fragrant bouquet that is showing a little tinniness at the moment from (possibly) a little reduction. The palate is medium-bodied with succulent red fruit, fleshy and silky-smooth in texture, revealing touches of blood orange toward the sweet finish. Enjoy this over the next decade. Drink 2021-2033."
89-91 Neal Martin, Vinous

Premiers Cru

"There is a background whiff of volatile acidity that adds a bit of lift to the notably ripe aromas of black cherry, cassis, earth and the sauvage. The rich, full-bodied, concentrated and muscular flavors evidence focused power on the balanced, long, rustic and markedly firm finish. This is a wine to buy and forget that you own it as it has excellent development potential. Outstanding. Drink 2033+"
90-93 Allen Meadows, Burghound

"The 2018 Chambolle-Musigny La Combe d'Orveau 1er Cru has a well-defined bouquet of red cherry, cranberry and crushed stone aromas. The palate is medium-bodied with fine tannins, very good acidity and a gorgeous, silky-smooth finish infused with impressive mineralité. An excellent Chambolle-Musigny from Romain Taupenot. Drink 2022-2040"

Grands Crus
£640 per 6x75 IB
"This too evidences just a hint of volatile acidity that also serves to add a bit of lift to the liqueur-like aromas of plum, cassis and port. The exceptionally rich, full-bodied and tautly muscular flavors brim with palate soaking dry extract that also buffers the exceptionally firm tannic spine shaping the powerful, serious and impressively long finish where the only nit is a hint of warmth. While not exactly a classically styled Corton, it does have the typical size, weight and punch of one. Drink 2033+"
91-93 Allen Meadows, Burghound

£985 per 6x75 IB
"The 2018 Mazoyères-Chambertin Grand Cru needs a lot of coaxing, but it is worth waiting as it reveals ebullient blackberry, raspberry, crushed stone and light truffle aromas. The palate is medium-bodied with fine-grained tannins, a superb bead of acidity and a very intense, quite structured finish. Romain Taupenot opined that this is closing down as winter falls, and I can see that, but it will ultimately turn into a very serious Mazoyères-Chambertin. Drink 2024-2048."
