Burgundy 2018: HENRI MAGNIEN

Henri Magnien.JPG

This small estate in Gevrey Chambertin has been revitalised under the stewardship of Henri’s grandson, Charles Magnien.

Domaine Henri Magnien has some incredible holdings and they use an old clone, Pinot Noir Magnien, which helps to give the wines added power and spice.  Recent vintages have been highly lauded by William Kelley and Neal Martin who highlighted the “gorgeous, pure, almost Rousseau-like fruit” in the 2015 Gevrey Cazetiers.  Definitely one to keep an eye on.

"His style of wines lean towards the slightly more fruit-driven side - more Mortet than say Rousseau. His is a new name on the scene and judging by the quality of these 2018s, plus two or three 2017s, it is a name to look out for."
Neal Martin, Vinous

GEVREY CHAMBERTIN VV 2018
£210 per 6x75 IB
"The 2018 Gevrey-Chambertin Vieilles Vignes comes from seven parcels of vines between 40 and 100 years old. There are blackberry, boysenberry and briar scents on the nose, which is quite dense and more backward than the regular Gevrey. The palate is medium-bodied with a saline, licorice-tinged entry and very fine weight in the mouth. There is some new oak on the finish that will need to be subsumed. Give this three or four years once in bottle. Drink 2022-2032"
89-91 Neal Martin, Vinous

Premiers Cru

"The 2018 Gevrey-Chambertin Estournelles Saint-Jacques 1er Cru comes from 0.33 hectares of 50-year-old vines. On the floral nose, incense and pressed iris flowers infuse sensual red fruit that turns "bluer" with aeration. The palate is very smooth and harmonious, with saturated tannins, well-judged acidity and a very cohesive, slightly powdery-textured finish that lingers long in the mouth. Superb.  Drink 2022-2036"
91-93 Neal Martin, Vinous

"The 2018 Gevrey-Chambertin Les Cazetiers 1er Cru comes from 1.47 hectares that cover the four soil types within the vineyard; Magnien informed me that he is the only grower who has all four. The vines are Pinot Magnien and some are up to 100 years old. A gorgeous bouquet of pure black cherries, blueberry and light violet aromas bursts from the glass. The palate is medium-bodied with supple tannins and a fine bead of acidity, and lightly spiced, leading into a harmonious, persistent, mineral-driven finish. This should evolve into a gorgeous Les Cazetiers. Drink 2022-2038"

Grands Crus
£450 per 6x75 IB
"Very generous wood fights somewhat with the notably ripe aromas of black cherry, cassis and soft game suggestions. The rich, full-bodied and concentrated large-bodied flavors possess a suave and rounded mouthfeel that contrasts somewhat with the powerful, dusty and moderately structured finish that offers very fine depth and persistence. Again, my sense is that the wood will eventually integrate. Drink 2030+"
