Tasting Notes

Deepish crimson. Dark and serious, lovely fruit, restrained, fine-boned. Great length. The opposite of showy and all the better for it. So much more complexity to come and should have a long life.

Score: 17

A subtle but not invisible application of wood frames the cool and pure essence of dark raspberry along with pretty floral nuances. The more refined and punch medium weight flavors display good minerality as well as fine detail on the lingering finish where the wood telegraphed by the nose reemerges. This moderately firm effort is lovely if a bit oaky for my taste.

The 2018 Gevrey-Chambertin Estournelles Saint-Jacques 1er Cru comes from 0.33 hectares of 50-year-old vines. On the floral nose, incense and pressed iris flowers infuse sensual red fruit that turns "bluer" with aeration. The palate is very smooth and harmonious, with saturated tannins, well-judged acidity and a very cohesive, slightly powdery-textured finish that lingers long in the mouth. Superb.
