Burgundy 2017: HENRI MAGNIEN

Henri Magnien.JPG

This small estate in Gevrey Chambertin has been revitalised under the stewardship of Henri’s grandson, Charles Magnien.  It has some incredible holdings and they use an old clone, Pinot Noir Magnien, which helps to give the wines added power and spice.

Recent vintages have been highly lauded by William Kelley and Neal Martin who highlighted the “gorgeous, pure, almost Rousseau-like fruit” in the 2015 Gevrey Cazetiers.  Definitely one to keep an eye on.

"Based on this showing, I'll be paying Magnien a visit in the near future."

Selected Highlights

2017 GEVREY CHAMBERTIN CAZETIERS 1er Cru - £395 per 6x75cl IB - “Attractively scented with both red and black fruit. Some oak spice showing and all the components not fully knit but all there with sweetness of fruit leading to a long tangy finish. Tannins are definite and slightly thick at this stage but polished."  17pts Julia Harding MW
