Tasting Notes
The 2014 Pavie is one of my preferred vintages of the decade, perhaps because the growing season put a leash on its power. It has a forward and generous nose, but there is clearly as much complexity as the Figeac that precedes it: dark berry fruit, iron filings, cedar and just a hint of tobacco. Quite involving. The palate is medium-bodied with fine tannins, harmonious and pliant, decent acidity with a silky smooth, persistent finish. This has some way to go. Excellent. The 2014 Pavie is clearly the star of Gérard Perse's portfolio this year. The aromatics are the most complex and absorbing, a mixture of red and black fruit, graphite and black truffle, a faint marine influence emerging as it unfolds in the glass. The palate is medium-bodied and demonstrates less substance and glossiness than the Bellevue-Mondotte. In fact, if you had this blind you might describe it as a more "classic" Saint Emilion, underpinned by quite firm tannin that provide this with impressive backbone. There is a toughness to this Pavie, but it retains balance. It has its sights set on longevity and for that we will have to wait, but it will be worth it. The Château Pavie 2014 is a blend of 60% Merlot, 22% Cabernet Franc and 18% Cabernet Sauvignon picked between 3 and 10 October, a lower percentage of Merlot as the vineyard moves towards more Cabernet in the blend. Matured in 80% new oak and 20% one-year old, it has an opulent and delineated bouquet that is heads above the Bellevue-Mondotte. The palate is medium-bodied with fine tannin, the Cabernet in sync with the Merlot, silky smooth in the mouth with a plush but not cloying finish. The mineralité shows through nicely, partly because of that higher percentage of Cabernet. This is a different style of Pavie compared to previous vintages and the team were clear in their emphasis on more Cabernet and less oak. The result is a Pavie that really exploits its propitious terroir and a wine that even compared to Gérard Perse's other 2014s, demonstrates more complex, more class and classicism. Incredible blueberries, violets, fresh wild mushrooms and sandalwood. Dried tannins. Full-bodied, yet tight and refined with a beautiful center palate of fruit and chalk character. The 2014 Pavie is silky, powerful and intense, with all of its elements in the right place. In 2014, Pavie is exceptionally polished, with plenty of richness but less of the bombastic style of some years past. Part of that is, of course, the personality of the vintage, but at the same time, there has been a move toward a bit more finesse here in recent years. A rush of raspberry jam, pomegranate, mint and white flowers leads into the vivid, richly textured finish. The 2014 is a gorgeous Pavie loaded with personality. The 2014 Pavie is magnificent. Silky and finessed to the core, the 2014 Pavie captures the essence of this site, but with more restraint and silkiness than is often the case and less overt oak influence. Raspberry jam, wild flowers, mint and new leather are all finely-knit, but it is the wine's perfume, aromatic nuance and overall balance that elevate it in 2014. The blend is 60% Merlot, 22% Cabernet Franc and 18% Cabernet Sauvignon. The 2014 spent 36 days on the skins, followed by malolactic fermentation in barrel. New oak is 80%. This gushes with boysenberry, açai berry and blackberry confiture notes, but they are quickly harnessed by fine chalky minerality that stays well-buried throughout, imparting mouthwatering cut despite the copious fruit. Presents lavish spice, licorice, fruit and minerality. If you’ve got it, flaunt it. Best from 2026 through 2040. Score: 96 James Molesworth, Wine Spectator Maturity: 2026-2040 11 January 2017
A beauty in the making, with gloriously pure boysenberry, raspberry and plum flavors, ample yet thoroughly integrated grip, and lithe acidity that lets the finish flow with an unencumbered feel. Offers chalky acidity. Score: 94 - 97 James Molesworth, Wine Spectator 01 April 2015

Nose needs to be coaxed out of the glass. Thick and much more athletic than the other wines. You can really see the terroir here. Lively proper freshness as well as great intensity and ambition. There is a perceptible difference between this and the other Perse wines that seem to have too much make-up. Long and tense and not too much sweetness. Still a bit dry on the end.
