Tasting Notes

One of the many highlights in this range, the NV Extra Brut Grand Cru V.P. (Vieillissement Prolongé) bristles with energy from start to finish. Two important vintages (2008 and 2006) come together in this release. Lemon oil, chamomile, pear, hazelnut, acacia and wild flowers open up in the glass, but it is the wine's interplay of power and freshness that is totally beguiling. There is so much to like. The current release is 70% Pinot Noir and 30% Chardonnay, 60% 2008 and 40% 2006. Disgorged November, 2015. Dosage is 2 grams per liter. Over the years, Egly's Champagnes have gained in polish and finesse without sacrificing their trademark power. Egly was among the first producers to emerge in the grower Champagne movement. As such, he is perhaps sometimes overlooked in favor of some of his younger colleagues. Make no mistake about it, though, these wines are at the very top of the pecking order in Champagne today. The NV V.P. Grand Cru emerges from parcels in Ambonnay, Bouzy and Verzenay, and sees a total of 72 months on its lees. Intense fruit, structure and minerality meld together in a super-expressive, vertical Champagne bursting with pure personality and class. All the elements come together in the glass. Effortless yet powerful, the V.P. is simply striking. Hints of honey, orange peel, spices, mint and chamomile add nuance. The V.P. succeeds in blending mature, slightly oxidative notes with tension and acidity, a rare combination that lifts this wine into the upper echelon. Disgorged July 2013.

The NV Grand Cru V P Extra-Brut (VP stands for Viellissement Prolongé or extended ageing) is an assemblage of approximately 70% Pinot Noir and 30% Chardonnay, and it is not disgorged any earlier than after six years. The youngest cuvée is based on 2008 (60%) and 2006 (40%), and was disgorged in December 2015. Clear, deep and nutty on the nose, this is a rich yet pure and fresh, straight and firmly structured blend that is still very young; it will gain further complexity over the years. The grapes for this cuvée are sourced in the grand crus of Ambonnay, Bouzy and Verzenay.

Based on 2005 (60%) and 2004 (40%), the NV Grand Cru V P Extra- Brut (Viellissement Prolongé) is an assemblage of 70% Pinot Noir and 30% Chardonnay, which was bottled in 2008 and disgorged after 72 months in July 2012. Golden-yellow in color, this wine opens clear, deep, ripe, concentrated and very fine on the nose displaying caramel and brioche aromas along with ripe peach, red paprika, red berry and rhubarb flavors, notes of black bread and a refreshing dash of lime juice. The attack on the palate is highly elegant, super fine and balanced again. This full-bodied yet pure and precise Champagne from the grands crus of Ambonnay, Bouzy and Verzenay reveals a nobly elegant, harmonious, fruit intense and almost sweetish texture as well as a long, very fine and fresh finish with a lingering and stimulating salinity. There is purity and intensity in this wine that should taste great for at least 5-6 years.
