Tasting Notes

This has a more masculine nose, cedar and sous-bois, blackberry, tertiary scents developing in the glass. Hint of singed leather. The palate is medium-bodied, well-defined, slightly abrasive tannins at the moment - a young pup yapping too loudly. Sharp, pointed finish. Fresh, but needs time to settle. Drink 2011-2018. Tasted July 2009.

Score: 89

Spiced intense cassis with cedary notes and a slight gamey aroma. Tangy and quite tight and a little leafy on the finish. That same brightness of fruit.

Along with Leoville Las Cases and a few others, this is among the stars of the appellation. Made in a more floral, supple, Margaux-like style, the deep ruby/purple-hued 2004 Leoville Poyferre exhibits sweet, broad flavors, and plenty of tannin lurking beneath the surface. However, the abundant cherry, black currant, licorice, and smoke notes obscure the tannic clout. This rich, powerful, broad beauty should be drinkable in 2-3 years, and last for two decades.

Compared to the blockbuster 2003, the 2004 is a more streamlined, elegant effort without the power, glycerin, and thickness of its older sibling. Nevertheless, it is an impressive St.-Julien offering a deep ruby/purple color as well as a sweet bouquet of smoky cassis and cherries, medium body, and admirable concentration, purity, nobleness, and elegance. It’s not a blockbuster, but rather a classic Bordeaux for drinking between 2008-2020.

Bright ruby-red. Very expressive nose offers redcurrant, tobacco, flowers and nutty oak. Supple, silky and pliant but with good energy to its red fruit and floral flavors. Finishes with broad, sweet tannins and a lingering note of tobacco. This remains quite open and appears to be evolving very much like the 2001.

Score: 90

Stephen Tanzer, International Wine Cellar 01 May 2007

Very clean, with blackberry, currant and light vanilla aromas. Full and juicy, with chewy tannins and a long finish. Impressive despite a slightly hollow midpalate. Wait and see as this grows in the bottle. May be a bit overextracted this year. Best after 2011. 20,830 cases made.
