The 2009 Chambertin-Clos de Beze is deep and inviting from the very first taste. This is an especially sensual, mysterious Beze endowed with tons of depth. Sweet floral and minty notes add freshness and lift, but this remains an intense wine that is showing just the barest hint of its ultimate potential. This is a dazzling showing from Pierre Damoy. Anticipated maturity: 2019-2039. Pierre Damoy’s 2009s have turned out magnificently. Damoy remains one of my favorite under-the-radar growers. A spicy but quite somber and restrained nose offers up dark berry fruit and slightly sauvage hints that introduce rich, powerful and impressively well-concentrated big-bodied flavors that are underpinned by chewy tannins and an explosively long and muscular finish. The sheer density of the mid-palate is incredible and the amount of dry extract is remarkably because while this is quite solidly structured, at present the tannins are almost invisible. This is still extremely primary and while it will require the better part of two decades to reach its majority, it should be well worth the wait.
