Tasting Notes

Cranberry, chalk, white pepper and flowers give the NV Brut Rosé Grand Cru its delineated, finely sculpted personality. Classy and polished to the core, Egly's Rosé captures the essence of the house style. This release, based on 2010, is perhaps a touch austere, but in a classic sense that will appeal most to readers who seek tension and energy. The blend is 70% Pinot Noir and 30% Chardonnay with just 2-3% still Pinot for color. Disgorged November, 2015. Dosage is just 2 grams per liter. Over the years, Egly's Champagnes have gained in polish and finesse without sacrificing their trademark power. Egly was among the first producers to emerge in the grower Champagne movement. As such, he is perhaps sometimes overlooked in favor of some of his younger colleagues. Make no mistake about it, though, these wines are at the very top of the pecking order in Champagne today. The NV Brut Rose Grand Cru is made from vineyards in Ambonnay, Bouzy and Verzy. This is another totally convincing wine from Egly-Ouriet, not to mention one of the strongest wines in the line-up. The Rose Grand Cru captivates for its gorgeous, fragrant fruit and silky, refined finish. It is a jewel of a wine. The Rose Grand Cru spent 48 months on its lees and was disgorged in July, 2010. Anticipated maturity: 2010-2015. Egly-Ouriet remains one of Champagne’s leading small growers. From top to bottom these wines impress for their inimitable class. A non-interventionalist approach in the vineyards and cellar, old-vine parcels in top vineyards and long lees-aging are some of the qualities that define these sublime Champagnes.

Sourced from the Grand Cru terroirs of Ambonnay, Bouzy and Verzena, the salmon-colored NV Brut Rosé Grand Cru offers an invitingly clear, fresh and subtle bouquet of red fruits along with floral and lemon aromas. Very delicate and elegant in the palate, this medium to full-bodied wine develops an impressive intensity and finesse. The finish is long and complex, and combines the purity of perfectly ripe framboise with mineral intensity and structure. This is an impressive Rosé of great finesse and purity, and a remarkably refined expression of its terroirs that often give full and fruit intense but less refined Champagnes. The wine I tasted was disgorged after 42 months on the lees in January 2014, and should be in great condition for 4-5 years, if not longer.

(60% Pinot Noir and 40% Chardonnay; 2 g/l dosage; disgorged in July, 2013 after 46 months on its lees): Light, bright orange. Pungent redcurrant and cherry on the perfumed nose, with a smoky mineral quality adding complexity and lift. Firm, sharply focused cherry and rose pastille flavors display excellent concentration and pick up a spicy element with air. Shows a hint of blood orange on the finish, which lingers with strong mineral-driven persistence. About 10% of this blend is still red wine from Ambonnay.
