Tasting Notes

Ripe black currant fruit with some cedar wood, licorice and wood spice are all present in this generously endowed, concentrated, low-acid Lanessan. The tannins are silky, and the overall impression is one of elegance, plumpness and beautiful intensity. This is a sleeper of the vintage and one that should only improve over the next several years and merit an outstanding rating. It should keep for up to two decades.

Score: 89

Generally a St.-Julien/Pauillac-like offering, the 2009 Lanessan seems more explosive and concentrated than prior vintages. I’m not sure it is the finest I have ever tasted, but it boasts a dense purple color as well as copious creme de cassis, cedar wood, underbrush, and spice notes. Beautiful opulence, silky tannins, and a long finish suggest this sleeper of the vintage will drink well for 2-3 decades. (Tasted once.)

An Haut Medoc bordering St Julien, just to the south of Gruaud Larose and planted on gravel soils, Lanessan is one of the oldest estates in Bordeaux, with vineyards dating back to 1310. A 4th growth in 1815, Lanessan was omitted from the 1855 classification because its owner at the time thought it ‘bureaucratic nonsense’and did not submit samples. Now it is known for producing traditional claret with good ageing potential. Often of Classed Growth quality, at inexpensive prices. The 2009 is full of rich blackberry fruit, smooth with a fine finish - possibly the greatest Lanessan ever made

Good smoky cassis nose and flavours that show its proximity to Saint-Julien, good balance, length and class. Drink 2014-20. (16+ points)

Aromas of sandalwood and berries. Medium-bodied, with firm tannins and a medium finish. A little one-dimensional, but should come out very well.

Tasted at Vintex. The excellent Lanessan ’09 sports a tightly-wound nose that is well defined with blackberry, plum and cedar, earthy notes coming through with time. This demonstrated much more sense of terroir than other Medoc 2009s. The palate is full-bodied with good fruit concentration, fine balance with a rounded supple blackberry and cedar finish that retains Médocian typicité. This is a great Lanessan that should drink well over 10-15 years. Tasted March 2010.

Dark crimson. Toasty and appetising on the nose. Thick and dense and succulent, too. Good balance!
