Tasting Notes

Perhaps the finest offering yet from Philippe Casteja’s small Domaine de l’Eglise, the Merlot-dominated, deep purple-hued 2005 exhibits plum, anise, mocha, and chocolate notes. Full-bodied and plush, with decent acidity, high but sweet tannin, and a touch of smoky oak, this full-throttle Pomerol can be drunk over the next 20+ years.

Score: 92

Robert Parker, Wine Advocate, RobertParker.com Maturity: 2008-2028+ 01 April 2008

Offers fresh mushroom and crushed berry, with coffee and toasty oak on the nose. Full-bodied, with velvety tannins and a vanilla, berry and cappuccino finish. A bit hard now. Needs time to mellow. Best after 2012. 3,000 cases made.

Score: 91

James Suckling, Wine Spectator Maturity: 2012+ 31 March 2008

Good medium ruby. Plum, licorice, mocha and toasty oak on the nose. Sweet and deep, with dark berry, cherry and menthol flavors still unfolding. Not showing its complexity today, but this rich, firmly tannic Pomerol has the structure to develop with five to seven years of bottle aging.

Score: 87 - 89
