Tasting Notes

Red-ruby. Sappy aromas of very ripe redcurrant, tobacco and minerals. Fat, sexy and deep, with flavors of redcurrant, plum, tobacco and spice lifted by the wine's mineral component. Wonderfully rich, full-blown wine, finishing with serious toothcoating tannins that call for at least four or five years of patience. This is close to 14% alcohol, but even this vintage of Troplong-Mondot has more acidity than the 1990.

Score: 92

(14% alcohol) Deep red, with ruby highlights. Liqueur-like aromas of chocolate-raspberry truffle and licorice. Supple, fat and sweet, with creamy, slightly roasted flavors of plum, redcurrant and red cherry. Finishes with huge, broad, dusty tannins that spread out horizontally to coat the palate. This will give pleasure early but appears to have the stuffing and spine for medium-term aging. Christine Valette compares this wine to her 1990, but notes that the 2003 actually has better acidity. This is developing very well in barrel.

Full red-ruby color. Distinct aromas of surmaturite: roasted plum, mocha and a whiff of raisin. Then fat, sweet, jammy and lush in the mouth; has a thick, exotic, generous middle that reminded me a bit of Le Tertre-Roteboeuf. Finishes with huge, chocolatey tannins and excellent length. If this carries enough freshness and backbone into the bottle, it will merit an outstanding rating. The alcohol ranged from 14% to 15% according to the cuve, noted Christine Valette, and the wine's pH is 3.85. This is aging in 60% new barrels; the percentage of new oak has been reduced somewhat in recent vintages.

This superb estate, run with impeccable attention to detail by Christine Valette, has produced a formidable, backward wine that will require considerable cellaring. When St.-Emilion’s new classification is announced in several months, it will be a crime if Troplong is not promoted to Premier Grand Cru Classe status. Even by Bordeaux standards this is a weighty vin du garde, with huge density, a backward, masculine style, an inky dark ruby/purple hue, and subtle notions of white chocolate, espresso roast, plums, blackberries, and currants. Full-bodied, powerful, and “closed for business” at present, it exhibits beautiful purity, stunning depth, and a long, persistent finish. Anticipated maturity: 2012-2025+.

Having exploded in quality, the 2003 is now much more massive, concentrated, and powerful than it was a year ago. Now one of the top right bank wines of the vintage, it exhibits a dense purple color as well as a bold, dramatic fragrance of melted chocolate, espresso roast, smoke, plums, blackberries, and black currants. Full-bodied and rich, with low acidity, high tannin, loads of glycerin, and massive, multilayered flavors, this brilliant effort (tasted on three separate occasions) reminded me of the prodigious 1990. Anticipated maturity: 2009-2022.

Just beginning to strut its stuff, this is an outstanding offering from proprietor Christine Valette. Deep ruby-colored with purple nuances, it displays an evolved, sweet nose of blackberries, currants, melted licorice, flowers, and earth. Medium-bodied, pure, and ripe, with low acidity, noticeable tannin, and a plump, fleshy finish, this seductive, round 2003 will be accessible early, and drink well for 12-15 years. While not as spectacular as the 2001, 2000, or 1998, it is a very successful effort. Anticipated maturity: 2007-2020.
