Tasting Notes

Showing a more tight, structured profile than on release, yet no less impressive, the 2007 Domaine Pierre Usseglio & Fils Châteauneuf-du-Pape delivers brilliant aromas of raspberry, licorice, roasted meats, sappy garrigue, and sweet spice driven aromatics on the nose. Full-bodied and large scaled, with a rich core of fruit and solid structure, this beautiful Châteauneuf-du-Pape should be give another 3-4 years in the cellar, at which point it should drink well through 2020.

Dark red. Expressive aromas of red berries and cherry, with notes of smoky garrigue and dried flowers adding complexity. Spicy and pure, with an exotic floral note joining the mineral-driven raspberry and cherry flavors. Finishes smooth and sweet, with little in the way of obvious tannins. This is delicious now.

The 4,400-case blend of 80% Grenache and the rest Syrah, Mourvedre, and Cinsault, the 2007 Chateauneuf du Pape boasts a dense plum/purple color as well as a wonderfully sweet nose of fresh black truffles, incense, blue and black fruits, roasted herbs, and earth. The wine is full-bodied and pure with fresh acids, silky tannins, and a voluptuous mouthfeel. Drink this beauty over the next 10-12 years. Brothers Jean-Pierre and Thierry Usseglio have been accomplishing amazing things To reiterate, the 2007s are the most profound wines Thierry and Jean-Pierre have ever produced. in Chateauneuf du Pape as evidenced by the 2007s, the greatest wines they have yet produced.

Made from the same blend as the 2006, the 2007 Chateauneuf du Pape possesses a dense ruby/purple hue as well as wonderfully sweet aromas of blue and black fruits, underbrush, truffles, incense, and garrigue. It is full-bodied, opulent, fleshy, powerful and substantial in the mouth. The Usseglios told me they had a couple of lots that went into this wine that hit nearly 17% natural alcohol! This was not caused by spiking high temperatures (which the Southern Rhone did not experience in 2007), but rather by the extraordinarily low yields and severe drought conditions that existed from spring through the end of September. What a superlative performance from proprietors Jean-Pierre and Thierry Usseglio. This is one of the few estates where the 2006s are so great that they eclipse their brilliant 2005s, and come very close to what was accomplished in 2007. 2007 is another stunning success from brothers Jean-Pierre and Thierry Usseglio.

A clean, pure, rounded version, offering cherry pie, red licorice, sweet toast and pretty spice notes that are well-entwined and linger through the medium-weight finish. Drink now through 2019. 3,000 cases made.

Grenache Noir 80%, Syrah 10%, Mourvèdre 5%, Cinsaut 5% A bit over-ripe on the nose, but good energetic driving fruit on the palate. The sample seems a little tired and the tannins a bit insistent, but there is real interest here. Worth looking at in bottle! Maybe slightly too much oak influence?
