Tasting Notes

A sensational effort for the vintage, this textured, opulent, superb Lynch Bages is already strutting its stuff and should easily last for 20 years. Medium to full-bodied with an opaque dense purple color, notes of flowers and cassis, a layered texture that builds incrementally in the mouth and tremendous purity and depth, it can be drunk now or cellared for two decades or more. Bravo!

Score: 93

This strong effort from Lynch Bages may turn out to be the finest wine produced here since the 2000. It is a backward, powerful, opaque purple-colored 2008 with fine acids, firm but sweet tannins, and thick, dense levels of attractive blackberry and cassis fruit intertwined with notions of underbrush, lead pencil shavings, and roasted herbs. It appears to be a denser, richer effort than some of the more lightweight Lynch Bages offerings of recent years. (91-93+ points)

Bright red-ruby. Dark berries, redcurrant, licorice and mint on the nose. Sweet, tactile, chewy and rich, with a firm edge of acidity giving cut and definition to the flavors of crushed cherry, redcurrant, minerals and spices. The building tannins come across as smooth. An elegantly styled Pauillac with a firm spine of acids and tannins for aging. (90+ points)

Tasted at the UGC 2008 tasting in London. Juxtaposed against the Pichon-Lalande, the Lynch Bages is far more reticent on the nose with more overt graphite and sous-bois aromas inflecting the fruit. It is tightly coiled at the moment and needs a couple of years to blossom. The palate is medium-bodied with a ferrous entry, firm tannins but a little disjointed and edgy at the moment. Certainly a little awkward now and still quite -strict- as it was in barrel. I feel that this Lynch Bages should be granted time to prove itself, so for now I will be prudent with my score. Drink 2013-2025. Tasted October 2010.

This has a cohesive nose: blackberry, cedar, just a faint hint of thyme - good definition and focus although not quite the thrilling clarity of Pichon Baron. This is a very "correct" Lynch Bages that reminds more a little of Latour, very pure black fruit, cedar, a touch of briary, a slight tertiary notes towards the finish. Very well balanced and defined, good length, nice persistency. Excellent - unadulterated Cabernet that should drink well over two decades.

Very solid, with a super beam of dark currant, tobacco and iron pushed by charcoal, melted fig and cocoa notes. This has a nicely rounded feel, but there's plenty of grip in reserve. Best from 2013 through 2018. 30,500 cases made.

Classic aromas of cigar box and cassis, just a little exotic too. More streamlined on the palate. Grainy and dense but also fresh and lively. Very youthful. (17+ Points)

Quite brutal smelling. Then rich and sweet and silky at first but followed by lots of acidity. A bit green and awkward. Very drying finish. Needs lots of time. Not charming at the moment... though it’s certainly solid and gets better toward the end. (16.5+ points)

Beautiful aromas of milk chocolate and crushed berries follow through to a full body, with soft, velvety tannins and a juicy finish.
