Tasting Notes

The debut 2007 Le Clarence de Haut-Brion has more vigor than the 2007 Les Carmes Haut-Brion; red dusky fruit, warm gravel and a touch of leather opens nicely in the glass. The palate is medium-bodied with grainy tannin, almost Pomerol-like in style with a fresh, savory, bacon fat-tinged finish. I would drink this now rather than later. Tasted March 2015.

Formerly Bahans de Haut Brion, the 2007 is a blend of 51% Merlot, 34% Cabernet Sauvignon and 15% Cabernet Franc This has a light slightly herbaceous nose but with good clarity. A leafiness in the background, though staying in the background. The palate is better than the nose – good weight, grainy tannins and very good definition. Furry finish with notes of blackberries and blueberries. Good length and more persistency than I was anticipating from the nose that just lacks a little tension. Still – a good second wine in a difficult vintage.

Currant and licorice aromas follow through to a medium body, with delicate tannins and a light finish. Very drinkable. Give it a year or two. Formally Bahans Haut-Brion. Second wine of Haut-Brion. Best after 2011.

James Suckling, Wine Spectator 31 March 2010

La Clarence de Haut Brion - new name. Floral aromas, with currant and light sultana. Medium body and fine tannins. Angular. Falls a little short. Somewhat austere. This is the new name for Bahans Haut-Brion, the second wine of Haut-Brion.

Score: 85 - 88

James Suckling, Wine Spectator 31 March 2008

The 2007 Le Clarence de Haut-Brion (formerly called Bahans Haut-Brion) possesses sweet and sour cherry, damp earth, spice box, smoke, and forest floor characteristics. It is pure, medium-bodied, and elegant, much in the style of its bigger sibling. Drink it over the next 6-7 years.

New name, new wine style! 51% Merlot, 34% Cabernet Sauvignon, 15% Cabernet Franc. Smoky, toasty, leathery notes on the nose. Pretty impressive intensity for a second wine! Round and supple on the palate - almost not like Bordeaux at all! Seems very Merlot based. Soft and supple with some hint of first growth polish. Neat, dry finish and pretty good length – just no great tannic depths. Debut vintage for this new name for the old Bahans, second wine of Haut-Brion.

The replacement for 'Bahans' as the château's second wine. Fresh, velvety-soft, juicy and crisp. Lovely balance and elegance. Savoury finish. Drink 2013-18.

The new name for Bahans Haut Brion, the second wine of Haut Brion. Plum and clove character with spices and tobacco leaves. Moderate intensity of sweetly ripe crushed black currant fruit, quite well-defined and a good strong crisp finish that endures.
