Tasting Notes

The 2007 Pichon-Longueville Baron has more cohesion and intensity than the Pichon Lalande, with fresh tobacco and graphite-infused black fruit that have some gusto. The palate is medium-bodied with crisp acidity, not a complex Pichon Baron, but there is no question that it is endowed with fine mineralité. And, who can resist that vibrant, graphite-infused finish that lingers long in the mouth. Drinking perfectly now, I can see this continuing to drink well for another 12-15 years. Tasted February 2017.

Pure fruited: citrus and a touch of pineapple and ripe apple. Delicately honeyed. Sour/fresh on the palate. Lively and bright if not yet complex.

Cropped at 34hl/ha, this has a deep garnet/purple colour. The nose is very closed at first but begins to show some attractive oyster shell aromas interwoven with the cedary black fruits. Something of estuarine about it: cockle sheds? The palate has good acidity, fine tannins, very tight, perhaps lacking a little depth but good acidity and clarity on the finish. Supple and engaging - a 'correct' Pichon-Baron.

Bright ruby-red. Very pure aromas of cassis, minerals, licorice and bitter chocolate, all lifted by a note of violet. Sweet, broad and round for the vintage, with lovely energy to the flavors of cassis, chocolate, minerals, menthol and flowers. Juicy and sophisticated wine with terrific balance and no dip in the middle. Finishes with subtle complexity and length and sweet, fine-grained tannins. A major success for the year.

Yields of just 32hl/ha. Only 2003 produced less. Picked young Merlots 18-20 Sep and then 1-9 Oct for older Cabernets. Very dark. Rich and round and a bit forced and sweet and furry. Very angular and green. Round and a bit simple.

Jancis Robinson MW, JancisRobinson.com Maturity: 2012-2017 10 April 2008

Black-red, pronounced smoky blackcurrant nose, shows freshness of fruit with good length and good grip, classy for the medium term.

Deep purple colour. Open nose with lots of interest - powerful aromas of blackberries, toast and warm earth. Medium to full-bodied with layers of spice, lead pencil and considerable depth of mid-palate fruit. Quite seductive. Very smooth with a strong tannic finish.

Impressive concentration for the vintage, with plenty of currant and berry on the nose and palate. Medium-to-full body, fine tannins and a medium finish. Well done for the vintage.

Score: 88 - 91
