Tasting Notes

The 2007 Leoville-Poyferre has a tightly wound bouquet at first, although it unfurls to reveal attractive cedar and undergrowth-tinged black fruit, dried blood and cured meat aromas. The palate is medium-bodied with a grainy texture, a fine thread of acidity and a grippy, almost Pauillac-like, graphite finish that lends body and focus. This showing at ten years suggests that, after differing performances in its youth, this Saint Julien has settled into a groove; in fact, I envisage it maturing with style over the next 15-20 years. Tasted February 2017.

Neal Martin, Wine Advocate, RobertParker.com Maturity: 2017-2032 30 June 2017

A blend of 66% Cabernet Sauvignon, 24% Merlot, 4% Cabernet Franc and 6% Petit Verdot. This has a very savoury, very earthy nose without its usual precocity that Poyferré usually shows out of barrel. The palate is well balanced, no traces of under-ripe fruit, obvious a good selection here but it still lacks the complexity of the previous vintage. The palate is medium-bodied, nice expressive earthy black fruit, harmonious, not quite the length of a great vintage but certainly with finesse, especially on the finish.

Rather dull crimson. Light nose. Rather simple and crude but there is some freshness certainly

Score: 16

Jancis Robinson MW, JancisRobinson.com Maturity: 2014-2020 12 May 2011

Pretty high volatility. Light, slightly powdery nose. Light fruit and a bit chewy and astringent on the finish. Sweetness on the front palate - far from classic dry claret! Slightly pinched finish but quite elegant - the right approach for the vintage.

Jancis Robinson MW, JancisRobinson.com Maturity: 2011-2016 10 April 2008

Grapy, richly fruity, medium-bodied flavors of cocoa, white chocolate, spicy herbs, and black currants jump from the glass of this deliciously evolved, complex wine. It is a soft, easy-going St.-Julien to consume over the next 8-10 years.

Robert Parker, Wine Advocate, RobertParker.com Maturity: 2010-2020 31 March 2010

Offers subtle aromas of smoky wood, fresh herbs and dark fruits. Full-bodied, with a solid core of fruit and soft, silky tannins. Very well-crafted and polished for the vintage. Much better than from barrel. Best after 2012. 20,000 cases made.

Score: 90

James Suckling, Wine Spectator Maturity: 2012+ 31 March 2010

A medium-bodied red, with good berry and mineral character, fine tannins and a medium finish. A little lean.

James Suckling, Wine Spectator 31 March 2008

Saturated ruby-red color. Reticent nose hints at medicinal black cherry, blueberry and camphor. Offers good texture and sweetness but seems a bit diffuse and lacking in structure today, with a rather high-pH feel and an impression of lowish acidity for this wine. Finishes with slightly dusty tannins and an easygoing character. A bit inexpressive and lacking in energy today; perhaps I caught it in an awkward stage.

Stephen Tanzer, International Wine Cellar 20 May 2008

Deep purple-red, nose of freshly crushed berry fruit, clear and clean and great purity of expression, full of charm yet fine length and balance.

Even crimson, bright. Very elegant and accessible nose - floral with ripe, blackberry, cherry and tomato. In the mouth there is lots of depth and flavour with richly textured black fruit. Well-integrated oak and a toasty finish.
