Tasting Notes

Quite a nice nose! Really perfumed. Some evolution and definitely red-fruited Pinot. Probably the best Pinot I can remember from Kumeu River, although there's a little toughness on the end. Full screwcapped bottle 1,320 g. 100% hand-harvested, 100% destemmed then crushed, Spontaneous fermentation. Two to three weeks total cuvaison. Thrice daily remontage or pigeage. Aged for 11 months in used French barrels, plus one or two new. 2022 was the last vintage. From 2023 the Pinot block(s) were replanted with Chardonnay because of virus which they didn't want to spread to the Chardonnay.

The 2021 Hunting Hill Pinot Noir leads with pistachio and rose hip, cranberry, sliced deli meats and peppercorns, with a hint of cheesecloth and tapenade. In the mouth, the wine is silky and light weight, with a smoky drift of tannin through the finish. Whether this smokiness is an oak character or from the skins in some way, I don't know, but I do find it curious. The acidity and the fruit work in concert in the mouth to provide freshness, detail and levity in spades. 13% alcohol, sealed under screw cap.

Score: 91
