Tasting Notes

The 2016 Ridge Pinot Noir comes from vines located at 325 meters, the highest that Hannes Storm farms, east-facing with a prevailing southeasterly wind that creates a cooler site and longer hangtime. It was matured in 25% new oak for 11 months. It is more youthful in appearance compared to the Ignis, the nose very cohesive with black cherry, raspberry preserve, crushed stone and light wilted rose petal aromas. The fresh, poised palate is medium-bodied with crisp acidity and perhaps the edgiest tannins of Storm’s 2016s. Long with a touch of spice on the finish, this is an excellent Pinot Noir. It’s a shame only 250 cases were produced.

The 2016 Ignis Pinot Noir comes from a low-yielding vineyard (2.5 tons per hectare) on decomposed granite soils and was matured for 11 months in 25% first-fill barrels, 25% second-fill and 50% third-fill. I find more complexity on the nose here compared to the Vrede; red cherries, crushed strawberry, orange peel and crushed stone come though with aeration. The open-knit palate is well balanced with crisp acidity, veins of Seville orange marmalade and quince infusing the red fruit, and a well-balanced finish. Probably ready to drink now, though it should keep for five or six years.

The 2016 Vrede Pinot Noir comes from shale soils, including around 10% whole bunches, matured for 11 months in 25% first-fill barrel, 25% second-fill and 50% third-fill. It has a perfumed, floral bouquet of cranberry and raspberry preserve scents complemented by pressed rose petal. The palate is medium-bodied with supple tannin; touches of candied orange peel infusing the tart red fruit with a brisk, slightly Pommard-like style. I would just like a little more substance on the finish here. Enjoy this over five or six years.
