Tasting Notes

The 2012 Puligny Montrachet 1er Cru Champ Gain is very reserved and mineral-driven on the nose that appears to have closed up since bottling. The palate is citrus-fresh on the entry with well-integrated oak, just a slight honeyed note toward the hazelnut finish that lingers long in the mouth, that tang of dried orange peel begging you to take another sip. This is a superb Puligny-Montrachet from the Domaine but it needs a couple more years bottle age.

(just the second vintage at Sauzet for this recently purchased parcel): Pale, bright yellow. Pear, peach, hazelnut and white flowers on the expressive nose. Then tactile and energetic in the mouth, with flavors of fresh hazelnut and dried fruits nicely framed by lemony acidity. Very upright, pure wine with a long, dry finish. Still a bit youthfully compressed and in need of a couple years of patience.

There is a hint of mandarin orange to the otherwise classic aromas of acacia blossom, pear, apple and wet stone nuances. The delicious medium weight flavors possess a beguiling succulence along with good detail and energy on the mineral inflected and persistent finish. In the same fashion as the La Garenne this is not particularly complex but I very much like the delivery.
