Tasting Notes

Again you see the step up between vintages - the 2014 of this wine was good quality but here you have greater depth of expression, blackberry fruits laced with mint leaf and bitter dark cocoa. Tight on the finish, tannins still fairly fierce even with four hours opening (no carafe). Character, personalty and punch. Frederic Bonnaffous director at this 18ha Dourthe Vignobles estate, 40% new oak.

The first bottle of the 2016 Le Boscq was corked. The second has a detailed, precise bouquet of brambly red fruit, cedar and light loamy aromas. The palate is clean and fresh, offering fine tannins, well-judged acidity and a slightly grainy texture, but displaying admirable precision and mineralité on the finish. Very fine. Tasted blind at the Southwold tasting.

The 2016 Le Boscq has a tightly wound bouquet that gradually opens in the glass to reveal black cherries, a hint of sloe jam and crushed violets, all quite pure and attractive. The palate is medium-bodied with supple tannin, a fine bead of acidity, a velvety-smooth texture and just a touch of vanilla coming through on the finish. This shows better than it did at the Cru Bourgeois tasting in September 2018.

The 2016 Le Boscq offers feisty black fruit on the nose, hints of white pepper and Padron peppers infusing the aromatics. The palate is medium-bodied with fleshy ripe black fruit on the entry, well judged acidity, quite pure and surprisingly approachable for a Saint-Estèphe, one of the appellations more sensual offerings this year. Tasted at the Cru Bourgeois tasting in London.

The 2016 Le Boscq is powerful, deep and full of character. Smoke, leather, tobacco and earthy notes add shades of nuance to this super expressive Saint-Estèphe Cru Bourgeois. Once again, Le Boscq delivers terrific quality and value.

Antonio Galloni, Vinous.com Maturity: 2020-2031 01 January 2019

The 2016 Le Boscq offers notable depth and power, not to mention plenty of personality. Inky dark fruit, smoke, graphite, leather and cured meats all flesh out in the glass. Powerful on the palate, with tons of aromatic complexity, Le Boscq delivers the goods. This Cru Bourgeois is, once again, reliable value from Saint Estèphe.
