Dark ruby colour, curling aromatics of gunsmoke and violet, a touch of rose petal with chalky tannins, this is full of savoury dark fruits with liqourice, cloves, smoked earth and black truffle, showing finesse and balance. Harvest September 21 to October 4. No chaptilisation. 50% new oak, 15% amphora, 3.6ph. Careful work over ageing with a reduced number of coopers (brought down to four from nine). This is their first organic-certified vintage, and first year with Juliette Couderc as technical director from beginning to end of the growing season. The 2021 L’Évangile is one of the triumphs of the year, especially considering L'Évangile is now farmed biodynamically. Sharply reduced yields—20 hectoliters-per-hectare versus upper 30s for the rest of the appellation—produced a deeply sensual wine. The 2021 spent 18 months in barrel, 40% new (significantly lower than in the past), with 15% of the wine aged in terra cotta. Those are only details though. What is most encouraging about L'Évangile is how far the property has come in the last few years. Superb. The 2021 L'Évangile is a model of contemporary excellence. The 2021 L'Évangile, aged in just 40% new oak from four cooperages and 15% amphora, is the first vintage to be made under certified organic. On the nose, it offers mainly red fruit, well-defined with black truffle and cigar smoked emerging with time. As I wrote during primeur, it exudes Pomerol DNA on the nose. The palate is medium-bodied with a silky-smooth entry, quite complex with black pepper and clove percolating through the red fruit. This is not powerful, but there is a heap of personality and a sustained, truffle- and black pepper-tinged finish, a ferrous tincture lining the aftertaste. A superb wine in the context of a tricky growing season, it will be fascinating to watch evolve in bottle. Score: 94 Neal Martin, Vinous.com Maturity: 2030-2070 22 February 2024

A blend of 69% Merlot, 30% Cabernet Franc and 1% Cabernet Sauvignon, the 2021 L'Evangile offers up aromas of plums, cherries and wild berries mingled with notions of rose petals, violets, licorice and tobacco leaf. Medium to full-bodied, ample and velvety, with fine concentration and rich, powdery structuring tannins that assert themselves on the finish, this estate's rather low average vine age meant Evangile didn't suffer much from coulure this year, and the rainy growing season also spared young Cabernet Franc from hydric stress—explaining its historically high percentage in the 2021 blend. The Grand Vin 2021 Château L'Evangile includes more Cabernet Franc and is 69% Merlot, 30% Cabernet Franc, and 1% Cabernet Sauvignon, brought up in 50% new French oak, with 15% amphora. Beautiful blue fruits, violets, chocolate, and some gravelly earth define the bouquet and while it's a medium-bodied, more mid-weight L'Evangile, it has a wonderful purity of fruit, ripe, present, silky tannins, outstanding balance, and a great finish. It's another vibrant, elegant, seamless Pomerol that will drink nicely with just short-term cellaring yet have 20 years of prime drinking. Score: 93 - 95 Jeb Dunnuck, JebDunnuck.com 06 February 2022
