Tasting Notes

The 2018 Chambertin Grand Cru has a very intense, brilliantly-defined bouquet with laser-like precision, incredibly focused and perfectly integrated oak. Less generous than Bichot's Chambertin at the moment though - this is biding its time. The palate is medium-bodied with sappy red fruit, insistent grip and plenty of freshness. Maybe just a little more confit in style than others. Still, a fabulous Chambertin that gains clarity and precision in the glass. Effortless. Tasted blind at the Burgfest 2018 red tasting.

Score: 98

The 2018 Chambertin Grand Cru has a gorgeous bouquet of intense red fruit, undergrowth, cedar and orange blossom aromas. The medium-bodied palate is lithe and deep, delivering fine tannins, red berry fruit and great tension and depth on the finish. This is an immense Chambertin, one where winemaker Cyrielle Rousseau has managed to impart a sense of dimension, yet this year I find that Rousseau’s Clos-de-Bèze delivers the nobility.

The most introverted cuvée in the cellar when I visited was the 2018 Chambertin Grand Cru, a deep and brooding wine that unwinds in the glass with aromas of ripe berry fruit, plums, rose hips and orange rind, framed by creamy new oak. On the palate, it's full-bodied, velvety and layered, with superb concentration and broad structural shoulders. This is a muscular Chambertin that it will be exciting to revisit from bottle, and I expect it will gain considerably from its second winter in barrel.
