Tasting Notes

Tasted blind at the Burgundy 2012 tasting in Beaune. The 2012 Meursault 1er Cru les Perrières from Domaine du Montille has a quintessential Perrières nose: cold wet stone, more tertiary than its peers, touches of walnut and smoke coming through with aeration. The palate is fresh and vibrant, citrus peel and orange rind on the entry, very good depth and gently fanning out towards the long finish. This is primal, backward and broody but I can envisage this ageing with real style and verve.

Here too strong sulfur and reduction render the nose impossible to assess. As one would reasonably expect this is intensely mineral-driven with an excellent sense of energy and tension to the saline-inflected flavors that display only moderate depth on the otherwise wonderfully long and well-balanced finish. My range offers the benefit of the doubt that more depth will develop with age.

55-year-old vines. Finished malolactic fermentation only two weeks ago. Big and tense and racy. Grapefruit and tension without that much richness. Real sinew. Very tough – needs to relax considerably.
