Tasting Notes

An attractively layered and fresh nose merges aromas of red and dark berries with those of earth, leather and a whiff of spice. There is excellent verve to the equally fresh large-scaled flavors that also possess solid mid-palate density before terminating in a youthfully austere and sneaky long finish that is very firmly structured. Even so, the supporting tannins are finer than usual and overall, this is more refined than it typically is.

Score: 91 - 94

Allen Meadows, Burghound Maturity: 2035+ 10 January 2019

Offering up aromas of smoked duck, cassis, cherries and toasty new oak, the 2017 Clos de Vougeot Grand Cru is medium-bodied, firm and chunky, without much flesh on its structural bones.

Score: 85 - 87

After their Chambertin, this is a much tamer, more timorous beastie. Correct cherry fruit with good persistence and density, but lacks the extra intrigue of the greatest grands crus. But what a luxurious distinction to make!
