Tasting Notes

I was not a fan of the wine for a very long time due to the prominent toast but was very pleasantly surprised to find that the wood had become much less perceptible. A still very fresh and beautifully layered high-toned floral and spicy black fruit nose leads to rich, full and naturally sweet flavors that possess excellent size, weight and mid-palate concentration before culminating into an intense mineral-inflected finale of striking depth and superb persistence. This remains notably youthful with still moderately firm tannins supporting the mid-palate and finish. I would advise allowing this beauty another five to seven years of cellar time.

Allen Meadows, Burghound Maturity: 2022+ 25 April 2016

Good full, bright, deep red, the darkest of these 2002s. Musky aromas of raspberry, blueberry, espresso and toasty oak; less floral today than the Bonnes-Mares. Superrich and deeply pitched, with flavors of blueberry, violet, licorice and earth. Dense but juicy, with terrific cut. Lush and smooth wine with strong material. Finishes with substantial oak spice and outstanding persistence. This started in a new 350-liter barrel, but Roumier racked it into one and a half barrels of used oak because he thought the wine was getting too toasty.

Score: 94
