Tasting Notes

I found some distracting dry tannins in the 2014 Château Barde-Haut, yet I suspect those will integrate with another 2-3 years of bottle age. Medium-bodied, savory, nicely concentrated, and balanced, it has an earthy bouquet of mulberries, blackcurrants, leather, and cedary spice that develops nicely with time in the glass. Give bottles another year or three and enjoy over the following decade.

The 2014 Barde-Haut initially displayed a slightly muddled nose with redcurrant and cranberry fruit, tobacco and incense aromas following through. Thankfully with aeration it seems to gain more precision and focus. The palate is medium-bodied with fine tannin, nicely balanced with firm grip, bold in style but there is fine detail and purity on the finish. Tasted blind at the annual Southwold tasting.

The 2014 Barde-Haut has turned out beautifully. Dark cherry, mocha, spice, leather and tobacco flesh out in the glass. Effortless, supple and nicely layered, the 2014 hits all the right notes. The midweight style of the year comes through very nicely in this classy, polished Saint-Émilion. Proprietor Hélène Garcin and consulting winemaker Alain Raynaud captured all of the vintage's potential. The blend is 90 % Merlot and 10 % Cabernet Franc.
