Tasting Notes

The 2016 Gevrey-Chambertin Bel Air 1er Cru is not as delineated on the nose as I would like, although it does improve and develop clarity with aeration. There is a Central Otago like allure here. The palate is medium-bodied with chewy tannins. There is good weight, a sense of heft behind this Gevrey, although the finish lacks a little clarity. Time should serve it well. Tasted blind at the 2016 Burgfest tasting.

The 2016 Gevrey-Chambertin 1er Cru Bel Air was affected by the frost, around 50% to 60% lost this vintage (equating to four barrels). It has quite a rich and expressive bouquet with touches of damson and sloes infusing the bright red berry fruitv vivacious and generous. The palate is sweet and fleshy on the entry, vibrant red fruit with fine tension and structure towards the finish. It does not possess the length of the best wines from Taupenot-Merme but it certainly has plenty of class and sappiness.

Here too a subtle touch of wood sets off the pretty red berry fruit aromas that are cut with floral and earth nuances. I like the sense of energy to the beautifully delineated middle weight flavors that flash evident salinity on the impressively persistent finish. Lovely and this should drink reasonably well early one yet also reward extended keeping.

There is a mild hint of volatile acidity to the moderately reduced nose. I like the sense of energy to the beautifully delineated middle weight flavors that flash evident salinity on the mildly tangy finish. This is really quite dense and serious and the underlying material is present such that this may come together and my projected range makes this implicit assumption though I underscore that this is not a given. (89-92?)

Cask sample. Mid cherry. Delicate peppery spice adding complexity to the seductively sweet red fruit. Smells sweet but fresh. That is just gorgeous, seductive, caressing and scented on the palate. There’s enough tannin for shape but they are already rounded and refined. I didn’t spit this. Succulent and long finish.
