Tasting Notes

Pale yellow. Aromas of yellow peach, apple and spicy, vanillin oak. Creamier in the middle palate than a barrel sample I tried last year shortly after the malo, but with its stone fruit sweetness nicely leavened by citrus and mineral notes. A very rich, tactile, smooth 2016 with the balance to offer early appeal and the stuffing for mid-term aging. The firm finish displays excellent savory length.

(still finishing its malo; as with the Perrières, these vines produced a full 40 hectoliters per hectare in 2016): Bright, pale, slightly cloudy yellow. Apple and a note of Christmas spices on the nose. Rich, plush and deep. Really spreads out in the mouth without leaving any impression of heaviness, with the dried apricot fruit complemented by oak spices. Finishes with rising length and a slight phenolic edge but appears to have the middle-palate sweetness to support it.

Residual SO2 is sufficient to dominate the nose today. Marvelously energetic and intensely mineral-driven flavors also possess excellent cut that characterizes the bitter lemon and saline-inflected finish that delivers seriously fine length. This chiseled effort is almost Chablis-like and will require at least a few years of bottle age first. Sweet spot Outstanding

Lean and tight, with oak spice wrapped around a core of lemon, apple and stone flavors. Firms up in the end, yet shows intensity and promise of things to come. Best from 2021 through 2029.

The 2016 Meursault 1er Cru Genevrières comes from two parcels, one on the slope and the other at higher altitude. It has a tightly wound bouquet with hints of mint and licorice lurking in the background. The palate is well balanced with a fine line of acidity, taut and linear, not a flamboyant Genevrières and just needing to manifest more character on the finish. Give this two or three years in bottle before opening.
