Deep brick colored, the 1982 Grange has an evolved/mature, meat/gamy and spice cake nose with a waft of balsamic, old chesterfield and some pleasant funk. Soft, elegant, fully mature and light to medium-bodied, it still has tons of spice and savory fruit to offer and satisfying length.

Blackish ruby. Molten treacle toffee plus tarmac on a hot day. Edge of coconut. Just the merest hint of oxidation. So easy to see why this wine was initially dismissed as 'dry port tasting of ants'. Very rich yet dry on the end with quite a bit of acidity. Very refreshing - perhaps because of its whole 6% of Cabernet Sauvignon. According to the label, just 13%.

The 1982 is another superb example of that. One of the jammiest, most precocious Granges when it was released, it has never gone through a closed stage and continues to drink beautifully. A full-bodied, opulent Grange, it reveals an inky/purple color to the rim as well as a beautiful nose of crushed blueberries, blackberries, smoke, toast, roasted herbs, and road tar. This dense, plush, expansive, seamless, seductive 1982 has not changed much since I had it nearly a decade ago.

A blend of 94% Shiraz and 6% Cabernet Sauvignon, this is the only mature vintage I have had before, albeit some 8-years ago. A deep garnet hue. A gorgeous, opulent nose of iodine, black cherries, violets and cassis. Great lift and definition. Smooth entry on the palate, quite lush with black cherry, touch of sweaty saddle, reminds me of a Cote-Rotie in many ways, though there is a little alcoholic heat marring the finish (but it does not detract too much.) A svelte, velvety wine with a lot of warmth and charm. Drink now-2015. Tasted July 2006.

Packed with bright flavors, raspberry and red plum dominating, with great length and sweet tannins to suggest a long life. Harmonious and elegant beneath focused power.--Penfolds Grange vertical. Best from 2007 through 2010. 5,000 cases made. #10 WS Top 100 of 1989.
