Tasting Notes

The 2015 Goulee was bottled in April 2017. The nose is almost identical to my impressions during en primeur: plenty of black fruit here, hints of bell pepper and tobacco tucked in just underneath. It is not complex, perhaps even a little rustic, but in a positive sense of the word. The palate is medium-bodied with firm, grippy tannin. This feels lightly peppered in the mouth with that sprinkling of powdered dark chocolate that I remarked upon from barrel, nicely structured with plenty of freshness on the finish. There is no crime in broaching this young because as I predicted, it is fresh and approachable, but should offer a decade's worth of drinking pleasure.

The 2015 Goulée is a blend of 77% Merlot, 19% Cabernet Sauvignon and 4% Cabernet Franc, cropped at 52 hectoliters per hectare and matured in 30% new oak. There is a noticeable marine influence that tinctures the black fruit here, pleasant lift from the glass, if missing the complexity of other vintages that I have tasted at this early juncture. The palate is medium-bodied with grainy tannin, moderate depth, just a touch of powdered dark chocolate sprinkled over the black fruit. It just feels a little simplistic on the finish and I suspect that it will be an early-drinking 2015.

Aromas of sweet tobacco, plums and cherries follow through to a medium body, firm and silky tannins and a fresh and bright finish. Juicy and flavorful. Drink in 2020.

The 2015 Goulée by Cos d'Estournel is fruity, supple and quite tasty. The richness of the year comes though in the wine's radiant, ripe dark fruit character. Hints of leather, smoke and spice add aromatic nuance to this gracious, mid-weight wine from the Cos d'Estournel team. Time in the glass really brings out the wine's aromatics nicely. The blend is 77% Merlot, 19% Cabernet Sauvignon and 4% Cabernet Franc.

The 2015 Goulée by Cos d'Estournel is plump, juicy and delicious. This Merlot-based blend delivers lovely intensity and radiance. The 2015 will be a delicious, early drinking wine. Sweet red cherry, raspberry and cinnamon grace the soft caressing finish. Over the last few years, the presence of Merlot has gone up in the Goulée. Tasted two times.

The largest production cuvee is the Merlot-dominated 2015 Goulée By Cos D'Estournel and it’s a forward, open-knit, attractive red loaded with notions of plums, black cherries, and leafy herbs. I’d happily drink bottles over the coming 4-5 years.
