Tasting Notes

The 2014 Lynch-Moussas has an uncomplicated nose, red fruit, briar and tobacco. This is an Old School claret, but it has retained freshness. The palate is medium-bodied with fine tannins, savory red fruit, orange rind, cooked meats and a soft landing on the finish. Fine, although this seems more evolved than I would have envisaged a few years ago. Tasted non-blind at the Southwold 10-Year-On tasting.

Score: 88

Sweet raspberry fruit, with tobacco, pencil lead and orange rind freshness. Smoky oak dominant, even a touch of tar, that takes away from the well expressed autumnal fruits. Enjoyable, less depth than in more recent vintages of this improving estate, owned by the Casteja family.

Score: 89

The 2014 Lynch-Moussas is a bold wine with good depth and enough fruit to drink well for at least a few years. Iron, herbs, smoke and gamy notes, along with burly tannins, give the wine a rustic personality.
