Tasting Notes

A dark ruby color is followed by aromas and flavors of sweaty leather, roasted herbs, spice box, and sweet cherries and plums. This superficial, pleasant, charming St.-Estephe lacks the depth, concentration, and finish of the vintage’s finest wines. Drink it now and over the next 10-15 years.

Score: 86

Following a succession of brilliant wines in the 1960s, 1970s, and early 1980s, this property has not been living up to its full potential. A lack of selection appears to be the major issue. The dark ruby-colored 2005 reveals some disjointedness along with herb, spice, and sweet fruit characteristics, but it does not possess the concentration one expects in this vintage. It should be consumed during its first decade of life.

Well-situated lying directly north of Montrose, this cru bourgeois made a surprising and stunningly good wine in 2003 that offers great value for money. Moving away from the robust, austere style of claret previously made, Meyney 2005 is forward with a nose of ripe soft fruits. Mellow in texture with good dense fruit and vanilla notes, this is well-balanced and well-made. Should be another good velue.
