Tasting Notes

(80 grams of residual sugar) Bright yellow. Heady nectarine, pear, honey and floral aromas; a bright mineral flourish adds vivacity. Sweet and seamless on the palate, offering sappy orchard and pit fruit and fennel flavors braced by a spine of juicy acidity. Shows excellent clarity and cut for such a sweet wine and finishes impressively long and smooth; a ginger note adds closing spiciness and bite.

We finished the tasting with a dessert wine that’s only been made previously in 1999 and 2003. There are only four barrels (all new) of the 2015 Condrieu Luminescence (100% Viognier), a massive, decadent and unctuously-textured elixir that offers a singular bouquet of honey, crème caramel, mulled pear and apricots. Tasting like the pure syrup of Condrieu, it’s a perfect wine to drink with a cheese course or fruit tart over the coming 3-4 years.

Universally viewed as a vintage with top quality potential. Guigal will produce their special Condrieu cuvée Luminescence for only the third time (previous vintages were 1999 and 2003). They had some grapes stolen last year so they made four not six barrels of this wine. Fermentation stopped at 14.8% and RS 80 g/l. Filtered rather than sulphured to stabilise. To be released in November. Philippe says he prefers people calling this super-rich rather than late harvest because it doesn’t have botrytis etc. Previously made in 1989, 2003 and 2005. To be served with foie gras poêlé or fresh fruit pudding. 1,200 halves filled. Deep gold. Very rich. Essence of Condrieu. Medium sweet. Low acid but nice quinine bitterness. Maybe like Condrieu of olden times. Long.
