Tasting Notes

Tasted blind at the annual Burgfest tasting, the 2014 Meursault 1er Cru Charmes from Comtes Lafon was not firing on all cylinders from barrel but clearly this is not the case now that the wine is in bottle. It demonstrated a subtle reduction on the nose with scents of dried quince complementing the citrus fruit, walnut and smoke aromas. The palate is well balanced with fine delineation, harmonious with notes of tangerine and orange zest, the oak nicely integrated with appreciable weight on the finish. Very fine, very sophisticated—this surpasses my expectations from barrel.

The 2014 Meursault 1er Cru Charmes perhaps doesn't quite crave the pizzazz of the Genevrière and in some way it is more conservative, although that does not detract from what is a very well defined, poised bouquet. The palate is balanced, very harmonious with a touch of citrus peel on the finish. There's weight here, but not quite the personality of the Genevières at the moment. Biding its time?

There is a trace of matchstick character sitting atop the slightly riper aromas of acacia, citrus, pear, apple and soft spice nuances. The succulent and exceptionally round flavors possess a borderline creamy mouth feel that contrasts substantially with a clean, dry, focused and notably tight finale. I very much like the excellent complexity and when coupled with the fine balance this should make for a terrific wine in due course, provided you have the patience to wait at least a few years first. Outstanding

Bright yellow. Musky aromas of lime and ginger. A premier cru of great density and solidity, boasting a texture of liquid velvet. Musky spiced apple and lime flavors offer a perfect balance of sweetness and supporting acidity. This outstanding Meursault finishes with superb persistence. At 1.5 g/l r.s., this wine comes across as distinctly rounder than the 2014, which finished with just 1 gram of residual sugar. The production was cut by 30% due to hail, according to Lafon.
