The finest Figeac since the 1990 and 1982, the restrained, but complex 2005 exhibits notes of black olives, new saddle leather, tobacco leaf, and sweet cherry and black currant fruit. The wine is medium-bodied with racy tannins as well as a streamlined style built on finesse and delicacy rather than on power and concentration. Consume it over the next 15-20 years. The best Figeac since the 2000 and 1990, this dense plum/ruby/purple-tinged 2005 offers up sweet aromas of creosote, incense, fruitcake, black cherries, and cassis. With soft but noticeable tannin this impeccably elegant, medium-bodied, authoritatively-flavored, pure, long wine will be drinkable between 2009-2020. Mid crimson - paler than most. Simple fruit flavours with some freshness. Very cool palate impression with fine tannins obvious only on the finish. As usual, a relatively muted wine at this early stage. Very dry tannins on the finish for the moment but a good effort. Historically one of the most prominent estates of the region, Figeac has been called the Medoc of Saint Emilion due to its high proportion of Cabernet Sauvignon - 35% in 2005 with 35% Cabernet Franc and 30% Merlot - which gives the wines its unique character. Fresh and herbal on the nose with lots of inky dark fruits on the mid-palate and a long coffee and mint finish.
